I do not enjoy spending a good portion of my Thursday night having to give Cat the Eldest a bath because his butt is an explosion of gross.

*shudder*

*flails*

There are times when long haired cats are just the worst animals in the world. And tonight was one of them. *shudders again*

Which musical counterculture do you fit in with?
created with QuizFarm.com
You scored as Old School Punk

Old School Punk as a genre formed simultaneously on both sides of the pond with Detroit and New York giving birth to bands like The Stooges, Ramones, and the MC5 while, on the British side punk bands popped up with such regularity and mayfly-esque lifespans that there doesn’t exist a definitive audio record of most of them. Although some, such as the Sex Pistols, have made such an impression on popular culture that there have been movies about them.

Leaving out the short films–because I’m not even certain how one would get his or her hands on them–the following is a full alphabetical list of the Oscar noms, even covering the lesser-regarded categories.

Bold the ones you’ve seen.
Italicise the ones you mean to see (at some point, whatever).
Underline the ones you really liked.
Strike the ones you strongly dislike.
+ Plus-mark the ones you would like to see win something.

12
3:10 to Yuma
Across the Universe
American Gangster
The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford
Atonement
August Rush
Away From Her
Beaufort
The Bourne Ultimatum
Charlie Wilson’s War
Eastern Promises
Elizabeth: The Golden Age

Enchanted
Die Faelscher
The Golden Compass
+ Gone Baby Gone
I’m Not There
In the Valley of Elah
Into the Wild
Juno
Katyn
The Kite Runner
Lars and the Real Girl
Michael Clayton
La Môme
Mongol
No Country for Old Men
No End in Sight
Norbit
Once
Operation Homecoming: Writing the Wartime Experience
Persepolis
Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End
Ratatouille
The Savages
Le Scaphandre et le papillon
Sicko
Surf’s Up
Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street
Taxi to the Dark Side
There Will Be Blood
Transformers
War Dance

Not surprisingly, I didn’t see a lot of movies last year. Far too busy. *shrug* Out of the ones on this list that I’ve seen, I honestly only hope that Gone Baby Gone wins something, because it easily was the best movie I saw last year.

I know that there are other fabulous movies on this list, though, that I haven’t seen. I hope I will sometime in the next year.

Erich just forwarded this email from one of our friends, Dan, regarding one of our other friends, Rob. Rob and I were roommates just after college. I’m just… shocked.

I apologize for the mass mailing, but I didn’t know a quicker way to send word. Please forward this along to anyone I may have missed.

I have just spoken with Rob’s brother Dan, and Rob is not doing well. In layman’s terms, Rob’s lung capacity and heart functions are comprimised. According to Dan, Rob is being assisted with his breathing, and his heart is enlarged and functioning at about 25% capacity. Rob is responsive (when not heavily sedated), and the doctors do not currently believe there has been any permanent damage to his heart or other organs or systems.

They know that Rob has some sort of viral pneumonia, but do not know what else may be wrong with him. Right now, the docs are treating the pneumonia the best they can, and monitoring his heart and other body functions.

Rob is at (hospital), and Dan can be reached through Rob’s cell phone. I am in contact with Dan, and my recommendation is not to bombard him with phone calls. Dan promised to be in touch with me and update me should anything change, and I promise to forward the word.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Rob is only 31, mind. He’s a very big guy – 6’5″, manwall build, played football in high school and college (for BU until the team was disbanded).

When I emailed our friend Dan back to pass on best wishes, I learned that he took a sudden downturn overnight. Yesterday it was definitely more of a “preventative” hospitalization because he had a lung infection.

Thankfully, he’s at a very good hospital. But still. He’s fucking 31. This shouldn’t be happening to someone my age. It just… shouldn’t.

Okay, so this is kinda random…

I’m physically sitting on the commuter rail train.  And it’s moving.  i.e. I’m somewhere between Attleboro and South Attleboro station.

AND I HAVE WIRELESS ACCESS.  My email works.  Teaspooon works.  And obviously, LiveJournal works.

Apparently, the MBTA is trying out a new wi-fi experiment on the Worcester/Framingham line.  The interesting side effect is that the train that I’m on, which normally goes down the Worcester line apparently, is fitted for the wireless access.

And so even though I’m on the Providence line, I can play on the Net.

This development needs to become permanent.  Because damn, THAT will make my commute more entertaining!

I iz intrigued!

So, folks that would like to come over… this is for you… :)

Date/Time
Saturday, I already have plans. Plus I need to get the house straightened up a bit. Saturday’s out, unfortunately, save the people who may read this who are already involved in said plans.

Anyone’s more than welcome to come over for Sunday. Come as early as you’d like that day. Game’s in the evening. The TV will undoubtedly be on all day.

Food/Drink Stuff
All I ask is that you somehow contribute to foodage/drinkage because Erich and I have some serious finance things we’re struggling with for the next three months (that are in addition to financing the UK trip. Whee). Food is fantastic. Soda’s fabulous. Alcoholic stuffage we probably have – but if you want to bring anything in particular, feel free. Just NO VODKA. For the love of god, no more vodka. We has plenty. I’m starting to feel like my grandpa here! :)

Erich and I *did* pick up another one of the mexican party packs from BJs this weekend (which was fabulous), we still have the spinach/feta filo pockets in the freezer, and I have the king cake in the freezer that was never eaten – so that’ll be open to thaw out for the party. In addition, if anyone’s interested, the Texas Roadhouse is doing party catering, and they have 3 different platters – one with appetizers, one of just wings, and one of just ribs. So if anyone wants to *order* food, we can do that, too.

If you’re definite or a maybe, please let me know here in comments (or via email, if you haven’t already). :)

A block of nearly 11 hours of sleep (for me, yes… shocking), followed by a good meal at the Texas Roadhouse did good work to get me feeling better today. I’m not quite at 80% yet… but feeling a LOT better.

We did some shopping at BJ’s and the adjoining Walmart Supercenter to get foodstuffs settled for the next three weeks or so (save milk and stuff that goes bad quickly). Came home, got a load of dishes and a load of laundry going, and now it’s time for a evening of BBCA -

Doctor Who Series 3, followed by Torchwood Series 2. :)

More later… but yes, I’m doing much better all. Thanks for your notes!

My webspace, www.measi.net, has been sitting pretty messily dormant for a long time. I’m not happy with the graphics or the layout. I need to do something, and I just don’t have the time or inclination to get something together for it myself.

So I figured I’d drop a note to my illustrious friends list, many of which are incredibly talented people, to see if they’re willing to help out.

Here’s roughly what I’m looking for. I am open to discussion for style/website organization ideas to freshen things up. I admit that the last time I really, REALLY put a site together on my own was probably a good six years ago now.

So…

1) A front splash/menu page graphic (text links will be added, so I can keep it a bit more flexible) – Page will be HTML only

2) Blog template that’s compatible with Blogger (anything from my Flickr account or wedding photos are up for grabs to use on this)

3) Template for my fanfic section (Who and/or X-Files) – Page will be HTML only, unless someone thinks WordPress may be an easier way to organize fic.

4) Template for Pagan pages – HTML only

5) Something for my LiveJournal! :) (any theme on this one)

I like things to have a nice, clean, uncluttered look to them – I’m not opposed to collage work if it’s done smoothly. I don’t want the graphics to overwhelm the pages – it needs to be readable. I’m open on colors.

Original art is welcome. Using my own photos is welcome.

I really, really am not a text phrases on top of graphics sort of person, regardless of how it’s put together.

Anyone interested? This is NOT a rush job, mind. I’m thinking… sometime like, oh, May? Seriously. Not a rush.

Compensation can be discussed. I’m very willing to pay for time.

Anyone interested? Comment here or drop me a line at measiwitch(at)gmail.com.

I haven’t posted here on measi(dot)net in a while – it honestly has been slipping my mind. I don’t know. I think I just want to keep all of the fandom insanity separate from my blog over here, but it seems that my life is just wrapped in fandom these days… so, eh. I probably just should let it bleed over and give up, eh?

In any case, it’s been insane since the beginning of the year, and here’s my thirteen things that have been taking over my life since the New Year:
1) Birthday celebrations. I’m 33, had a fantastic birthday with friends over a Pats game and some delicious strawberry hookah smoking.

2) The Patriots. Sundays have been owned by football. Absolutely owned. And I’m loving it. The Superbowl party is in the works. :)

3) Being sick. I fell ill with a cold on New Year’s Eve, and still have the annoying cough that goes with it, despite otherwise feeling fine. It’s not a painful cough, mostly in the mornings and evenings, but the cold weather (and the hookah smoking on my birthday) didn’t help.

4) Fanfic writing. I’ve been finishing up pieces that were due around the holidays. Got one done and posted last week. Now I’m working on the other one, which I hope to have completed this month. A small idea just snowballed and, with some help from another writer, looks to be a much better, satisfying piece.

5) Work. I’ve been absolutely insane with work lately. Lots of little projects, lots of paperwork to get through because insurance policies have just renewed as of the first of the year, and lots of really random little things like redesigning the company letterhead (eep!)

6) Torchwood & Doctor Who – Torchwood Series 2 just started airing in the UK last week, and it starts on BBCA this Saturday, along with Doctor Who series 3. Both shows are must-see, IMHO. The second series of Torchwood is already MUCH better than the first. Much slicker, stronger plots, and much more sure of itself. And Series 3 Who? Absolutely wonderful. The first six episodes are a mixed bag, but the last seven are much-watch. Particularly Human Nature, Family of Blood, and Blink which should be on in March. You must watch Blink if you haven’t done so. It’s a brilliant piece of television, regardless of science fiction leanings. It’s up for a Nebula award, and undoubtedly will go up for a Hugo this year (the writer, Steven Moffat, has won for his Who outings the past two years).

7) Money issues. Erich and I have been… let’s say, stressed. Partially holidays related, partially increase in heating bills related, and partially issues that come up with his mom’s estate. I’m just really worried about financing our trip to England in October.

8) Emotional stuff. Erich’s worn down by his mom’s estate affairs. I’m worn down from being constantly on the run since, oh, last August. We’re both in dire need of a break. Thankfully we’re not snapping at each other, but both of us are just exhausted.

9) The weather. Unlike last year, where it was nearly 50 degrees for a good portion of January, it’s been quite cold with lingering snow. I think it’s contributing to some of the emotional exhaustion.

10) Attempting to get our lives back in order. Vet appointments are being caught up on, getting stuff cleaned around the house, finishing up the final few thank you notes from the wedding, etc. – we have a lot of little projects around the house that we desperately want to get done.

11) Cat issues. Along with the generic vet appointment, we’ve been dealing with some feline frustration. One of the cats was taking to peeing all over the house. We’ve added a couple additional cat boxes (one upstairs, one out in the sunroom), and that seems to have stopped most of it. We still have an idiot cat who is apparently going into a cat box and peeing, not realizing its ass is hanging out of the box when it goes, though. Haven’t caught the culprit, but somehow I think it’s one of our bigger three – Colley, Gus, or Hoodsie.

12) World of Warcraft. Attempting to have some me-time has resulted in a lot of hours playing WoW again, and doing all of the in-game related stuff I’ve wanted to do but couldn’t commit the time to while also planning the wedding. Meaningless to real life, of course, but still a little sense of accomplishment all the same.

13) I really don’t have a thirteen. Maybe commuting time? The MBTA continues to suck and get worse. This morning’s sightseeing excursion on the commuter rail took us ringing around the city through Dorchester because apparently there was something wrong on the mainline track. Never mind the fact that when we got to the junction where both lines meet up by South Station, there were three trains that came through the main line. AND, our train was forced to wait through three trains coming through (10 minutes, standing still), despite us being the ones that were running 20 minutes late into the station. *sigh*

Will February calm down? I hope so!

Fuck – was that meeting supposed to be on Sunday afternoon? Joy. There goes most of Sunday, since I have to drive up and drive back to Brighton, and scrap the personal to-do list I was making for the day.

*sigh*

I swear, once the Superbowl is over, I can’t see anyone for a while, just because I don’t know what a weekend without any sort of obligation is. I love y’all, but my inherent need for being alone is literally SCREAMING at me because I haven’t been able to retreat into my own head since – I don’t even remember. I’m farking exhausted, sick of not having the energy to get shit done because I’m busy with random social stuff happening on the weekends.

I honestly miss puttering around my own house for two days with no set plans. And I desperately need the time. Each fucking weekend, SOMETHING gets planned.

I was really, REALLY looking forward to having this weekend be free, too.

*headdesk*

I’ll be doing my first raid of Kara tonight in WoW. Only took me a friggin’ year since the expansion came out to be able to go – typical Measi slowness. Should be fun, though. I haven’t been in a raid since, oh, November ’06? Whenever the last time Burrito Bandits raided pre-expansion. I can’t even remember at this point if it was AQ20 or ZG.

I’ve been reading friends’ pages as the reviews from this weekend’s Arisia convention come in. As always, it’s a mix. Mostly good experiences, which is great to hear. But as always, criticisms are quickly dismissed with “well, go do it yourself, then!!” regardless of validity. It’s frustrating, and it’s the main reason why I distanced myself from the con after 2005. *shrug* We’ll see.

It’s not like I could have gone this year – and we won’t have the money next year post ZOMG Geek Honeymoon! either, so who knows?

Not much else for now… time for lunch…
