Ten years ago, I started this blog honestly as a combination of boredom project and the realization that I cannot keep a handwritten journal.  My brain simply goes too fast for my slow handwriting crawl, and I’d get irritated and stop writing – sometimes for months at a time.  I figured I’d give blogging a try and settled into a then quite comfortable easy-going journal site called Diary-X.

I honestly didn’t know what would come of the blog. I mean, hell – what interesting stuff do I have to write about?  My life certainly didn’t qualify as interesting.  I was a mid-20s single woman living in Boston with few friends, no love interest, an entirely geeky personality that didn’t generally bode well to social acceptance (especially as a girl) and was quite honestly still in a rather bad way with a nasty looming relationship that had really screwed me up.  I figured it would probably drift off as many little whims do with the web, and I’d lose interest and move on.

And from time to time, I have done that a bit – there are months that I haven’t written as much, or that I just have gone into inane meme copy hell just to keep posting.  But that’s the thing – I kept posting.  Much to my surprise, I enjoyed posting.  I loved meeting new people that had the same interests as I did.  I felt part of a social circle again, even when I felt isolated and alone offline.  I learned from others.  Somehow I helped others – including some insane good things that I still am amazed that happened.   I found love, I experienced some nasty rejection, I switched jobs, friendships were made, broken, or strengthened, and I continued to grow.

For example – consider that I started this blog before I met my husband.  Seriously – my entire relationship, right back to our first date, is blended in the pages of this blog.  (the early entries I’m still importing from Diaryland bit by bit, because they predate entry tags).  That alone is crazy to me.  It’s amazing and wonderful to me – and it’s a complete accident.  I just happened to capture it.  This blog predates five of six cats, the house, my current job, my first car, my first trip overseas, experiencing death in my family, and of course -getting married.

It’s quite a list of things in ten years, and that doesn’t even count the silly day to day stuff I’m usually writing about.

I do read some of my old entries from time to time.  I recognize the person in there, even if she’s now years detached from the person I am today.  I laugh at the silliness and smile at the good memories.  Some of those old pains are still quite raw.  Others have healed.  Some I don’t get why they were a big deal in the first place.  It really is my weird, crazy life in a nutshell – and I’m realizing that it doesn’t matter if I have anything important or profound to say.  I just need to write – and it’s as much for me to connect to myself as it is to connect to other people.

So thank you everyone who reads and shares this journey with me – I love connecting with each of you, and I hope it will continue for another ten, evolving into whatever the Internet becomes by that time.  :)

Best,

Melissa

This March marks a surprising anniversary for Measi’s Musings – my tenth anniversary of blogging.  Seriously - ten years of Ramblings of a Geeky Witch (which morphed into a more generic Measi’s Musings a few years ago).  I can’t believe I’ve been blogging this long, nor how different a person I am now from back then.

I began my blog on March 29, 2001 – mostly out of boredom and for a little place to write down thoughts and nonsense while keeping some basic HTML skills up to date.  My blog started on Diary X, then morphed to LiveJournal, then to its current home on my own domain via Blogger, and finally via WordPress.  Although I haven’t merged all of the original Diary-X entries into WordPress yet, they do exist on a very messy little archive over on Diaryland.  Some day – I’ll get them all here.

So – in honor of my blog’s entry into double-digit years, I’m holding a stitchy giveaway. Here are the items (except two, mentioned below) that that will be in the giveaway basket:

2011-03-23_20-53-19_513

  • Birthday Bellpull Samplers #1: Sept, Oct, Nov & Dec (Victoria Sampler) – comes with charts and threadpacks for all four samplers.
  • An ornament – stitched by me – from the Prairie Schooler’s new Folk Eggs collection (not pictured above).
  • A one year gift subscription to either Just Cross Stitch or Cross Stitch and Needlework magazine (winner’s choice) – not pictured above
  • A random pull of six springy color skeins from The Gentle Art sampler threads – included are Daffodil, Lambswool, Huckleberry, Cameo Pink, Grape Leaf, and Lavender Potpourri
  • Hatch into Springtime chart, part of the Lil’ Britters line from Brittercup Designs
  • Little Bo Peep chart, part of the Country Cottage Kids line from Country Cottage Needleworks

To have your name added to the drawing:

  • Comment on this post with an email address where I can contact you in case you’re the winner.
  • For a second entry, link to this giveaway post on your own blog & include your blog URL in your comment.

I will be taking entries until Saturday, March 26th at 11:59 U.S. Eastern Time.  The winner’s name will be drawn on the 27th and announced as part of my blogoversary post.

Good luck!

By the Full Moon ornie - Ink Circles

Can you believe it’s November already?  I’m honestly trying to figure out where the hell this year has gone.  I swear autumn lasted like two days.  Yes, I know it’s technically still autumn, but once that first killing frost hits and the remaining leaves on our trees fall in one big clump to the grass, I consider that the final bell toll for autumn. It’s now pre-winter here, and the gloomy, rainy weather today is just reinforcing that.

I have a few things to blog about today – some are tidying projects, others are stitchy projects, etc.

Holiday Cards – I love sending them.  I never have money to buy lots of gifts, and this is my way of sending holiday cheer.  So… if you’d like to get a card from me, please pop over to my nifty little google form HERE. I am unafraid of international postage, so no worries if you’re not stateside. :)   And I am the only person who will see this address list.

Also included on that little nifty form is a spot to let me know, if you love sending cards like I do, where you’re collecting addresses.  So do let me know.  At first I was just going to have the confirm page blast my email, but then I realized I’m probably going to post that link over on Facebook and with my slight Zynga game addiction, I have a few game buddies that I honestly don’t know beyond the game, and I’m not sure whether I want to have an autobroadcast via Farmville to my address.  So yeah… I will send it to you via the method you prefer.

Stitching Progress- it’s amazing how little progress I get done when I’m not at a 2-day retreat where all I have to do is stitch.  BUT… I finally finished my Halloween ornament (above) on like… the 30th… and now I”m finishing it with the beading/whipstitch technique I learned from Belinda a few weeks back and ZOMG IT LOOKS GOOD!   I’m sure it sounds completely corny and stupid and probably completely over the top in how bouncy I am about this, but the excitement is truly genuine.   This is the first class I’ve ever taken.  Everything else – beyond the very initial picking up of a needle in 5th grade art - I’ve had to figure out on my own.  So I am so excited to know how to finish something in a way that doesn’t make me feel very worried and embarrassed about my knowledge base.  I know I’m doing it how I was taught, and the results are showing, and I honestly could stitch ornies and smalls all day now because I know how to finish them!

Lindsay's piece as sending 10/26/10

I continue to be busy on the UFO Round Robins that I joined this year.  The first one is now on Round 6, and I have Rachel’s lovely Queen of Freedom by Mirabilia in my possession.  She’s almost done, and I think I might… just might… get her done (aside from beads) this round so I can send her home.

The stunning piece to the left is Lindsay’s Celtic Cross, which I had the pleasure of working on during my vacation week after Stitcher’s Hideaway before sending it off to the next stitcher.  There are only four colors in the entire piece – yellow, black, a light blue, and a dark blue.  And this is a large piece – I believe roughly 13×13 inches or so?

I now have Rahenna’s piece, which is a Dimensions butterfly pattern that I’ve looked at for years - every single time I’m there – when I go into JoAnns, but I never buy the thing.  So this will be my trial run on it.  :)

Comment Issues – Rachel let me know that she was having trouble adding comments to my blog, and I wanted to know if others are having the same trouble.  If you are, can you please drop me an email and let me know?  measiwitch(at)gmail.com.  Maybe I’ve missed something or added some widget that’s making my blog cranky.

Alright, more later – that concludes my lunch break.  :)

Not that it’s a huge thing, but I’m in the middle of pulling entries from various blogging sources into this blog so everything’s in one place.  This may mean I have some duplicate entries, lots of “locked” entries (primarily from LiveJournal), and some general messiness to get through.

I’ve discovered that LiveJournal is pulling not only my entries, but also comments and all tags and such. So I’m going to be sifting some stuff. There’s a lot of fandom random stuff that I honestly don’t need over here and it’ll be getting deleted. I’m primarily interested in keeping, for example, the entries regarding my wedding planning – actual journal entries. The fandom squee, unless it’s lengthy, semi-interesting squee, is just going to get deleted.

Most of it is spur-of-the-moment stuff. It’s not getting deleted from LJ, but I don’t need it here.

So yeah – don’t mind the messiness around here. I’ll get it cleaned up eventually. :)

I’m participating in The Wagon’s Rotation Relay for the Stitching Olympics, so my rotation this month is a very odd one for me.

The relay guidelines are to work two hours on each piece, then move on. I’ve decided to include ALL of my current WIPS and UFOs in my rotation for the month, and I’ll see where it goes from there. I’m going to do this in a screaming order. I’ll return to my normal style of rotating in March.

Project list:

Spring Queen (Mirabilia) – currently stitching
Home is Where the Cat Is (Dimensions)
Cats on a Staircase (Bucilla)
Elemental Dragons: Spirit (DD)
Apache Wedding Blessing (Kooler Design)
Egyptian Sampler (TW)
Floral Bellpull (TW)
Astrology Sampler (Witches Stitches)
Legends of the Dragons (TW, DD, BS)
Smoky Mountain Cats (Pegasus Designs)
Fantasy Triptych (TW)
Magical Night (TW)
Noah’s Ark (TW)
Millennium (TW)
Walk in the Woods (Cricket Collection)
Garden Samplers (Prairie Schooler)

I think it will be a good way for me to really take a look at what I want to do for a rotation, too. I have plenty of projects kitted up now, and there’s a nice mix of diversity in them. Hopefully that will help me progress on things – particularly those TW patterns which I love, but can’t always focus on stitching.

So onto my January goals…

1) Work on many new starts as I wish for guilt-free January YES – I started three projects. :)
2) Finish kitting any projects I’d like to start in 2010 YES. I may have overlooked a thread here or there, but I can start on any of the pieces I wanted to kit.
3) Sort any old WIP photos and redo my progress pages online ALMOST- everything’s been photographed, and I’ve updated my main page, but I still need to build the individual progress pages.
4) Have an uninterrupted 6 hours of stitching time YES – had a wonderful one two weeks ago.
5) Figure out which piece I’d like to send around for the UFO RR that will hopefully kick up over on the TWWRR board. YES – have this solved too.

So yes, a very productive month. I’m pleased.

So for February, my goals are:

1) Rotate through all of my WIPs and UFOs at least once
2) Finish Home is Where the Cat Is
3) Finish Spirit
4) Put together the individual progress pages on my website
5) Finalize my rotation that will start in March
6) Remember to photograph the TUSAL this month. :)

Off to get some work done. I’ll post thoughts on individual projects this week.

With December speeding by, I’m trying to get a sense of the things I’ll be doing project-wise next year.  I’d like to get a general plan together before Christmas hits, purely for that part of me that’s a type-A personality.

In my previous entry, I listed the random Stich-a-Longs I’ve joined in some form.  Today I put together a full list of my cross stitch patterns (excluding magazines, which are mostly there for reference & round robin ideas).  I honestly didn’t think I had quite THAT many pieces in my stash… eep!

So now I’m planning my “attack” on all of it.  Obviously I can’t do it all next year.  I couldn’t do all of it in 10 years.  But I definitely want to make a good push at it, and it all depends on the method of my rotation plan.

Based on past experience, a firm hourly or goal-oriented rotation just doesn’t work for me.  Nor does stitching pieces in a particular order.  One thing that does work is designating a theme for a slot (a designer, a piece size, or a focus slot, for example).  So I’m going to be doing a modified blend of a screaming, hourly, and goal rotation.. if that makes sense.

The rule is that I can stitch these pieces in any order.  This will allow me to be flexible for when Round Robins come in and such.  I must put a minimum of 5 hours on any one piece before I can move onto another piece.  I may stay on a project for as long as I’m feeling in a groove on it – progress in any form is a good thing!  I must stitch on every piece in the rotation before making any adjustments, such as included pieces, slot themes, starts, etc.

Right now, I’m thinking about this as my beginning rotation for 2010.  I expect to have a decent amount of time for stitching this winter.

TW SAL:  Floral Bellpull
Small/Commute: Home is Where the Cat Is (will finish this round)
Small/Commute #2: Elemental Dragons: Spirit
Backstich Focus: Egyptian Sampler
Christmas SAL: Cats on a Staircase
TW/DD/BS SAL: Legends of the Dragons (new start for 2010)
Free Slot: For Round Robin
Open Choice: Apache Wedding Blessing
Open Choice: Astrology Sampler

I’m crazy, aren’t I?

Honesty, the b.s. from Globat’s moves to new servers just finally pushed me into fixing things.  I’ve wanted to go to WordPress for a while because of the flexibility, but had dreaded transferring my entries over.

Turns out, I didn’t need to worry – there was a very easy blogger to WP importer.  I do need to clean up my categories a bit, but that’s not as big of a deal to me.

So yay!  It’s fixed and running!  Now if I could just get the Zero Room back up again, I’ll feel on top of things website-wise.

Taking a half-day today from work, planning on getting laundry hung up then getting back into writing Wiggie’s fic.  Ever progressing… *sigh*

My webspace, www.measi.net, has been sitting pretty messily dormant for a long time. I’m not happy with the graphics or the layout. I need to do something, and I just don’t have the time or inclination to get something together for it myself.

So I figured I’d drop a note to my illustrious friends list, many of which are incredibly talented people, to see if they’re willing to help out.

Here’s roughly what I’m looking for. I am open to discussion for style/website organization ideas to freshen things up. I admit that the last time I really, REALLY put a site together on my own was probably a good six years ago now.

So…

1) A front splash/menu page graphic (text links will be added, so I can keep it a bit more flexible) – Page will be HTML only

2) Blog template that’s compatible with Blogger (anything from my Flickr account or wedding photos are up for grabs to use on this)

3) Template for my fanfic section (Who and/or X-Files) – Page will be HTML only, unless someone thinks WordPress may be an easier way to organize fic.

4) Template for Pagan pages – HTML only

5) Something for my LiveJournal! :) (any theme on this one)

I like things to have a nice, clean, uncluttered look to them – I’m not opposed to collage work if it’s done smoothly. I don’t want the graphics to overwhelm the pages – it needs to be readable. I’m open on colors.

Original art is welcome. Using my own photos is welcome.

I really, really am not a text phrases on top of graphics sort of person, regardless of how it’s put together.

Anyone interested? This is NOT a rush job, mind. I’m thinking… sometime like, oh, May? Seriously. Not a rush.

Compensation can be discussed. I’m very willing to pay for time.

Anyone interested? Comment here or drop me a line at measiwitch(at)gmail.com.

I was getting tired of the other color scheme – I needed to return to my blue roots. Something a bit more soothing, a bit less busy. :)

So ‘ere we go.

I still need to add my little mini-intro, my blogroll, and my links back up – I’ll get that done in the next couple days.

A couple changes – I’m finally ditching Haloscan, and will start using the Blogger comments. Definitely drop me a line on this entry and let me know if things are working okay.

But yes… everything will be working again shortly. I’m just in the middle of changing… *ahem*

It’s Holidailies, which means that several people who don’t commonly read me may be visiting. To the newcomers- welcome! I hope you’ll enjoy my writing, want to share comments and hopefully read after January 1st has passed us by…

With the beginning of Holidailies, I thought it best to start with introducing myself. It’s been five years since I wrote my original bio for my blog. I’ve cut and pasted new info, but it’s due for an overhaul. So…

My name is Melissa. I usually go by Mel (with both co-workers and friends), or by Measi (a childhood nickname that stuck). I’m on the cusp of age 32, a double Capricorn (if you’re into astrology), lazy-about-practicing Pagan, geek, cat lover, and craft-aholic.
I’ve lived in New England for 13 years. I originally came to Boston to attend Boston University, fell in love with my new surroundings, and have settled in to a life I love.

I’m engaged to a wonderful man named Erich. He’s a native Massachusetts boy, with the slightest bit of the accent that has made the region so famous. He’s about 6’3”, giving him nearly a foot of height over me. I don’t even reach his shoulder. We’ve been a couple since 2001, living together since 2002, and homeowners since 2005. We live in the Providence, Rhode Island metro area in a pretty old colonial house with a decent yard. Both of us still commute to Boston for work, so we’re close friends with the Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority, also known as “the T.” Driving our commute daily would be a nightmare. Erich works in IT. I work as an Admin. Assistant.

One of the biggest reasons Erich and I clicked so well is our mutual geekness (geekitude?). We both enjoy computer games immensely. He tends to go for the first person shooters and more violent games. I tend to lean toward the Sims, Myst, and other simulation/strategy games. We both play World of Warcraft a lot, and often together. We also enjoy Renaissance faires, tabletop gaming (think Dungeons & Dragons), fandom conventions, and all of the nerdy things from our youth that led into such interests. I have additional geekness coming from years of marching and pep band membership.

We are owned by five loving but very weird cats, who have come into our lives at an oddly clockwork 2-year interval. Colley is 7, Fizzy is 5, Gus is 3, and the twins, Noby and Elly, are 1. Photos and details about each of them will follow in later entries this month.

The major hobby I talk about in my blog (other than blogging) is my stitching. I’m an avid cross-stitcher, and tend to have about a half-dozen projects in the works at any given time. I originally learned when I was in 5th grade through a class art project. I enjoyed it so much that I kept on going. It helped me feel a bit more connected to my mother, who sewed all the time when I was a child. She loved that I was interested in embroidery, too, and helped me select materials and such until I was out of college. I went through a few years of disinterest, but found myself really getting into it again about two years ago. I tend to work larger pieces, so completions are few and far between. But I find that the journey of stitching is honestly more fun than the completion. Most of my current projects and all completed projects are located in my Flickr account (on the right hand bar).

So what do I normally write about in my blog? It depends on my mood. I tend to write about what happens during my days. Lately I’ve been on a bit of a meme streak due to an inability to sit down, think and do quality writing. When I do have the time to really think and write, I’ll talk about topics that are personal- adoption, faith, lukewarm attempts at politics, etc.

So who’s reading? Drop a note and say hi!

Back on Diary-X, I’d maintained a little webring called “A Glimpse of Time.” It’s happily still going, although I’d forgotten to update some things with my new template (and with the demise of Diary-X).

So if anyone’s interested in joining or rejoining, all of the links are now fixed, and the new homepage is here.

And I was rather envious of Melinda’s spiffy little template, so I popped over to the same designer.

I’m not really a pink girl– but it is a cute template. :) AND… it actually loads correctly on my work Mac (unlike the orange), so… yeah.

I’ve updated and realigned all of my read links. All of the former DXers have been updated to their current locations. The only person I couldn’t find a new link for was Georgie. If anyone can update where she’s gone to, please let me know.

In order to clean up my links (due to DX death) and just give everything a good scrubbing around here, I’m putting this FYI up.

Parts of Measi (dot) Net will be a bit wonky over the next week or so. I’m going to be moving a LOT of stuff around as I update pages, clean out some dead files, and get things a bit better organized.

This WILL NOT affect Minarae’s journal, which is in its own subfolder. My journal, however, will most likely be offline for a good portion of Saturday as I get it set up in WordPress. If you see this page switch to something autumn-like, then I’m done. :)

My basic plan for the next week or so….

Saturday, Mar. 4th: Update all Stitching pages.

Sunday, Mar. 5th- Friday, Mar. 10th: Copy and paste all Blogger-centric entries in to WordPress, & categorize them. Continue to archive 2001 from Diaryland archive if time permits.

Saturday, Mar. 11th: WordPress version of journal goes live.

Whee…. intarweb work….
