Since today’s the last day of January, it’s time to recap my progress for Theme-a-licious’s January “Jardin January” theme.  I didn’t get anything done beyond what I did last week for IHSW, but still… I made good progress on Floral Bellpull.  I’m happy, although the backstitching is still looming at me.  But hey, it’s a Wentzler piece.  There will ALWAYS be backstitching to do!

I loosely could include my start of Fox Run Mill and Why I Love New England as Jardin January starts too, I suppose, as I was working on borders that incorporated flowers/acorns/etc.  But WILNE isn’t at a floral point… yet.

But still – a good month, particularly since I didn’t set any concrete goals beyond stitching!

So of course, with January coming to a close, it’s time for me to plan the next month.

On Saturday, I mentally went through the events on my calendar for the next four weeks and realizing it may be one of the wackiest, busiest set schedules I’ve had in quite some time where there isn’t a wedding of some sort involved.  I spent part of the weekend organizing my Google calendar, and I think I have everything in order.  Thank goodness for Google calendar, BTW – sharing calendars between Erich and myself is a godsend, even if he probably doesn’t want to see every farking stitching event I have going.  :)

Anyway, part of that organization is figuring out what I’ll be stitching this month.  I have a long weekend with Presidents’ Day, two days (minimum) of jury duty, a stitch-in at my LNS, a Superbowl involving the home team, the Beanpot hockey tournament with my collegiate alma mater, a dungeons & dragons game, and oh – another stitchy retreat at the end of it to celebrate the first weekend in March.

And it’s a short month.  o.O

The theme for Theme-a-Licious is “Fangirl February,” where you stitch on at least one piece by your favorite designer (if you can’t send a Valentine).  That will be influencing my rotation and goals for the month.  Once again, Floral Bellpull will make an appearance since it’s the one TW I really, REALLY want to get done this year. I’m also going to pull out Legends of the Dragons for a little while.

Here are my goals for February:

  1. Finish part one of Deep Blue Sea (exception: any missing colors still on backorder)
  2. Finish border for next square of Floral Bellpull
  3. Scissor fob for Stitchers Hideaway exchange
  4. Work on BoInk
  5. Work on Legends of the Dragons
  6. Put stitches in on one other WIP (any piece)
The only thing on this list that has any sort of time constraint is the scissor fob.  I don’t imagine it will be too difficult since it’s a small piece.  Deciding *what* I want to stitch will be the hardest part.  I’ll likely do some browsing while I’m at Bush Mountain Stitchery on Sunday for the Superbowl stitch-in and then work on it on my train rides and/or my jury duty days next week.
I’ve been playing around with different ideas for my rotations.  Several of the groups I’m in via Yuku or Facebook have stitch-a-long weeks themed to different designers.  I definitely will jump in and out of those if my stitching works with them.  Although I have put some ideas to paper for a set rotation schedule, I don’t think I’ll do that this month.  I’m definitely in the mood for indulging in the “whatever piece is screaming loudest” style rotating with my stitching.
I may, however, do an organized rotation for March Madness next month.  To think of me working on a separate WIP every single day could be HIGHLY amusing.  (it may have to be one of those “post every day of the month” bloggy events, too!)
We shall see.
Happy Tuesday everyone!

Ye Olde Coffee Shop as of 9-5-11I hope everyone in the USA had a lovely Labor Day weekend with fun activities (or productive ones, if you did some catch up work).  Mine was good – some relaxing, some actual project work.  I managed to do a nice amount of stitching thanks to episodes of Torchwood, Doctor Who, and Battlestar Galactica.  Ye Olde Coffee House by Little House Needleworks got a much added boost, as you can see in the photo.  I also put a few hours into a piece I’m stitching as a gift, but can’t post photos of it until it’s finished and sent off.

I’m only working two days this week – I have Thursday, Friday, and next Monday as vacation days, so while I didn’t get the usual house chores for the weekend done, I’ll do them later this week.

I did, however, get a lot of progress done on a massive project – organizing my stash.  I last did this back in late 2010 – if you’re reading my blog on its actual page, you might notice that “stash” tab at the top of the page.  Yeah… that’s about when I last looked at the list.  Unfortunately, that was done shortly after I returned from my first Stitchers Hideaway retreat last October.  Since then, I went to another Stitchers Hideaway retreat, the Celebrations of Needlework show in Nashua, and a new LNS (Bush Mountain Stitchery) opened up a mere 2 hours from my house.

My stash intake has been a bit out of control this year – and I jokingly blame Lisa – who has been my partner in crime for all of these adventures.  Not really, of course.  What’s actually happened is that over the past year, I’ve had one of those lucky times in my life where my knowledge of my own hobby expanded greatly.  I’ve been stitching for many, many years (25-ish), but my knowledge of different designers and fabrics and fibers really only started to expand about six years ago, and common in-person connection with other stitchers honestly didn’t start much before last September, when the Rhode Island Stitchers group first started getting together.  Once those pieces started falling into place, I began learning from other people rather than just the self-taught things that I’d picked up along the way.  I’m no longer just admiring things over the internet but completely intimidated by them – I’m finally feeling some confidence that I could actually delve into those crazy projects by Heaven and Earth Designs or Chatelaine.

It’s glorious, really… but also a bit dangerous on the wallet!

With Lisa’s help, I sorted through 99% of my charts, and she was kind enogh to organize them in piles by designer before putting them back in the magazine holders from IKEA that I keep them in.  I’d already made a good dent in my magazines several months ago, and I also did an inventory of my spare specialty flosses.  I’m not going to bother with DMC or Sullivans floss – Lisa had a good point when she reminded me how often that inventory’s going to change, and it’s too much of a headache.

Among my stash I did find duplicates of a couple patterns (apparently I really, really like them) – so two items are already reserved for the WIPocalypse stash box!

Erich and I got together with the guys on Monday and played a session of his long-standing (and long on hold) Dungeons & Dragons campaign. I have to admit, I just don’t have the mental stamina for it anymore.  Maybe it’s because I’m out of practice with the mental focus required for gaming for many hours on end, but after three hours or so, my brain just starts to wander.  I seem to always leave the games these days feeling guilty because I’m just not able to “stay on task” such as it is, despite the fact that for quite a bit of the time, there’s simply not much for me to do.  And yesterday was one of those days where I really should have paid attention better – the module Erich incorporated into his campaign was a bit overpowered for our group.  We struggled through it with a lot of trouble.

Ah well… it’s only a game, right?

But still – a good weekend, with decent weather that defied the rainy forecast.  The rain arrived this morning rather assertively, and it’s been cool and damp all day and will likely stay that way until sometime Thursday.  It’s actually cool enough that we almost – almost – have all of the windows closed.

Tonight I’m already in bed before 11 pm, which is highly unusual for me.  I had a cup of Sleepytime tea about an hour ago, hoping I can catch a bit more sleep than last night because I was dragging all day.  Hopefully tomorrow won’t be too insane and I can enjoy my second long weekend.  :)

So over the past couple weeks, I’ve realized that I got myself into a bit of a stitchy pickle this year.  As I described this morning to my good stitchy friend Rachel, I am easily attracted to the potato-chip theory when it comes to round robin stitching – I can’t bite into just one.  Not that there’s anything wrong with multiple round robin stitching – and I absolutely adore it.  The big problem is that it leaves literally no stitching time for any of my other projects.  Aside from the folk egg, I haven’t worked on any of my pieces since Stitcher’s Hideaway in late February.  I truthfully don’t expect to be able to until the first robin wraps up this summer, either.

So I’ve decided that while I adore RR stitching (and honestly, I really do – I love the community it builds and the people I meet), I’m going to have to cut myself off cold turkey after the current group is done to intentionally focus on my own projects for a while.  I have a bunch of stuff in progress, and I have even more that I’d love to start – but I really can’t justify starting them when so much is lingering around.

As scary (and possibly insane?) as it is to start looking so far in the future, I’m looking at 2012 now.  Partially because the final RR will wrap up the first week of December, so it makes sense, and partially because the longer that I have to beat this idea into my head, hopefully the better it will stick.

Of course,  I need things to be playful and silly while I’m actually serious about keeping myself organized, so I shall deem 2012 the year of the WIP Apocalypse. Clearly the Mayans had no idea that the end of their calendar actually referred to my stitching!  And of course, I welcome other stitchers to join me in this WIP Apocalypse.  It’ll be a year-long SAL simply to celebrate progress on our pieces.  Whether you’re a one-at-a-time stitcher or a crazy rotationer like me (or heck, not even a stitcher – crocheters, knitters, etc.)- it’s all good.   For now I’m just taking feeler interest – I’ll do a formal signup announcement sometime in the fall, when it’s honestly reasonable to be planning for 2012.  :)

And I apologize for the huge burst of caffeine that probably partially inspired this post – I’ll come back to earth later, I promise!

It’s another Monday morning. I’m feeling a bit guilty about all of the time I’ve spent slacking off in front of the TV, so I’m getting a to-do list to get my butt moving again. To be fair, I was feeling pretty crappy over 4th of July weekend thanks to womanly issues – and the heat and humidity this week have been pretty nasty, so most of my time has been on the couch in front of the AC… simply because that’s been the only comfortable place in the house to be.

I have a lot of mail-related things to get done, but also projects I’ve been putting off. So… for this week:

  • Get together with Erich’s dad for his birthday
  • Finish sorting old clothes for donation (will do on Sunday)
  • Finish addressing all postcards for personal swaps on postcrossing
  • Finish addressing all cards for the July RR swap on postcrossing
  • Send out Rahenna’s piece for the UFO RR
  • Sort sheets & towels – match sheet sets up
  • Put away all clean laundry
  • Sort socks (dun.. dun… DUN!)
  • Finish the little Christmas ornie for the LaS stitch-a-long
  • Make pies before the ingredients go bad
  • Sift through 1 month of uploaded journal entries & fix them
  • Get my WoW account settled & ready to go for gaming again

And some generic tidying once the weekend comes around.

My focus to start this week is all of the mail-related things. That’s my focus for tonight. Years of penpalling and swapping still come into play and I’ll fly through them tonight!

I’m particularly proud that I’m ready to get the UFO RR on its way this week. I honestly could have sent it on last week, but I’ve been meaning to get a photo taken of it… AND… as I do every round, I do a good sticky roller over the piece to clean off any stray cat hair (in my house?!? NEVER!) before I send it off. We were out of sticky rollers – an issue now solved, so I’ll get that packaged up tonight.

Longer term projects include getting my stitching stuff completely organized, but that’s weather-dependent because my office is on the 2nd floor of our house and therefore not in the AC.  If we get a cool, rainy day by the end of the month I’ll tackle it – otherwise that’s a “early autumn” thing, as annoying as it is.  I received a fantastic excel chart from Jenn (thank you!!) to help organize my stash.  I’m looking forward to really getting in there and getting everything sorted.

Erich’s been very busy the past week cleaning out old boxes and tubs in the basement – a lot of it has been my stuff he’s been sorting, and I’m just accepting that it needs to happen. I’m so horrible about throwing stuff out that, aside from a few things this past weekend, I haven’t even dared look in the boxes of what he’s throwing out. I’m just letting him do it. I’ve kept deflecting the responsibility to go down there and clean stuff out, and he finally just started doing it – and as much as it kills me, I know I need to allow him to just do this so it’s done. I seriously doubt anything’s vital down there. To be fair, the vast majority of it has probably been in boxes down there since at least the cleaning frenzy before our wedding (in 2007) if not since we moved into the house (in 2005)… so I seriously doubt I’ll even notice it’s gone. A lot was just old bills and crap that’s been collecting forever. Hell, there were bills and other papers in there from my college apartment – they’d just gotten mixed in with junk in storage somehow.

So yes – our recycling containers have been very full the past few days. He’s doing a great job getting through stuff. Anything that’s a bill or has potentially important info on it is getting put in a specific wooden box for the “burn” pile. Two or three times per year Erich pulls out the wheeled camp grill (one of those grated metal jobbies) onto the driveway, pulls up a chair and just tosses everything into the fire. It’s a bit too hot right now – I imagine the next burn date will probably be sometime in September. But he’s got a nice, big pile to burn this time. We’ll have to invite friends over for a BBQ and bill burn at this rate!

So anyway, that’s my rambles for this morning. Time to get to work…

So here’s the deal.

Several years ago, per the recommendation of a former friend, I selected Globat as a webhost. To say they’ve been absolutely horrific in the last several months is an understatement, and I’m regretting ever hosting with them – to the point that I’m willing to break my contract, drop them the “go away” money, and find a new host.

So for folks who use a 3rd party webhost, who have you used, and who do you recommend? I’m essentially looking for the standard webhost with some database capability (to run efiction), WordPress, and something that won’t put me much above $100 per year for hosting.

Any recommendations?

First, welcome to several new friends I’ve met through memes in WoW and Slash fic writing… hooray!

So far, it’s been a very successful weekend. I have tomorrow off (hooray, Patriots’ Day!), so I’ll be able to devote a good chunk of it to writing, exactly as I’d hoped would happen. I’m feeling VERY pleased. :) Spring Cleaning success – hooray! And the weather has turned out surprisingly good… the original forecast was for scattered showers all weekend. We had just a bit last night, but otherwise it’s been partly sunny and mild. All of the tree leaves are exploding. The only downside is my allergies – but after this winter, I’ll deal with sniffles!

the big project of the weekend

I’ve decided to make a friends cut today.

Bottom line is this – I enjoy talking with other people, including those who do disagree with me, provided that we can exchange thoughts in a respectful manner. However, I also consider my journal a sanctuary for my own thoughts, and wish to be able to express them comfortably. When I feel uncomfortable, I need to solve that issue.

A lot of this discomfort comes from Doctor Who fandom. I should not need to justify that I am enjoying a tv show, nor that I am excited by the changes that are upcoming in the show, while also being sad that another era is ending. I do not feel that I should have to choose between the two. Enjoying the Doctor/Rose ship is not something that should prohibit me from also enjoying Moffat’s work. Frankly, it doesn’t. I really don’t care to defend Moffat’s decisions or his work, particularly to people who hate him so much that such discussions are pointless.

There are things on LJ that I just don’t want to read about. Particularly with another year before Who is back full time, and especially once the series starts up again. And likewise, I don’t think those who so strongly disagree with me should have to read my thoughts that they disagree with so strongly.

We’ve gone in different directions, and that’s okay. You have every right to post what you want, how you want. But I need to disconnect because of it.

I wish those I’ve had to defriend best wishes for the future, and I’m sorry for my shortcomings that I’m simply too uncomfortable with what you’re posting, and too uncomfortable knowing that someone who disagrees with me so strongly has access to all of my thoughts.

I’m being overly technical here, but I need to for my own sanity and to make sure I don’t half-ass things here…

nothing to see unless you’re interested in stupid logical to-do lists
