Where the HECK did February go?!?
(oh yeah… I spent them in front of the TV watching the Olympics and stitching…)
Ready for a long post?
I haven’t done one of these in a LONG time. It feels good, actually.

Ready for a long post?
I haven’t done one of these in a LONG time. It feels good, actually.
The boys are off at BJ’s to do the every-other-month run, and I opted to stay home to get a few things done. The kitchen’s now scrubbed, so I’m taking a few minutes before tackling the bathroom. We have a few people coming over for the Super Bowl tonight. I’m pretty sure everyone’s rooting for the Saints in this household. Rooting for Indy as a Pats fan? May honestly be illegal. Plus, hey – New Orleans needs all the good vibes right now. Indy’s won one recently.
So far, it’s been a good weekend all around. I did a bunch of stitching yesterday – working through three projects on my rotation for 2 hrs each. Spring Queen continues to be the very doomed piece – I had to give it a preliminary bath already for some dirt on the stitches. I must have had a loose pencil in my backpack, and on very light yellow… yeah, instant dinge. Ick. Thankfully all came out. The piece is dry, and I can start stitching on it again next time it comes up in the rotation. I’ll get photos up when I update for the Olympics tomorrow evening.
On other news that I’ve been chomping on all week (and panicking about) – it’s probably one of the few times in my life that I was very, very happy to see my period arrive. Erich and I had a bit too much fun about 2 weeks ago, and yes – while married, no… we’re not in a situation where we really are set for kids. That night, however – well… yeah. So anyway, my brain the next day started doing some math, and then I started swearing profusely. It’s not been a good couple weeks of worry. I’m very relieved that we’re not looking at a baby in 9 months. SO GLAD.
Not that the biological clock isn’t still ticking, mind – but Erich and I need to take care of a couple of things right now that really, really would cause problems had we been pregnant. And I sure as hell was not thrilled with the idea of handling a pregnancy whilst this obese.
I could do without the cramps today, though. ;P
Anyway… break over. Off to get some more work done.
Honestly? Things are pretty good. I’m having some usual depression that occurs around the holidays (mostly dealing with the obnoxious folks who argue against saying Happy Holidays and who shove “Jesus is the Reason”). But other than that, it’s been good.
Stitching has helped me reground myself. I’m feeling more relaxed and on top of things. I’m finally breaking out of the leftover cough from whooping cough that slammed me in late September (seriously… three farking months. UGH).
I’m starting to tinker with writing again. Before I get deep into completing my Support Stacie obligations, I’m going to run through some other ideas.
Some may just come this week – I have the entire week off from work, and I’m feeling the need to play.
I’m celebrating Yule tomorrow. With the snow outside, it may make an outdoor ritual a bit cold… but I may go out anyway. If not, a cozy evening in my office is in store for me now that the support for my altar table has been found.
Erich, Matt and I are heading to my Mom’s for Christmas, so I’m very, very happy that BBC-A is showing the Who episodes on only a day delay.
I’m back in geek fever again, and it’s taking a much happier, healthier track this time.
So stay tuned. I’m expecting to be posting a lot more come 2010.
I’m one of the people who purposely doesn’t go out for Black Friday. I may have to just because my nails are getting to that too long to do anything length, but otherwise… no. I will stay home and stay far away from the insanity.
Thanksgiving cooking went very well yesterday – I have conquered the 27 pound turkey. The leftover pile is terrifying, but oh… it was so good. I’m looking forward to the traditional leftover plate in a little while for lunch. Our Thanksgiving dinner consisted of the turkey, cream cheese mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes & apples, sausage stuffing, rolls, and cranberry/apple/orange slaw. We bought pumpkin and apple pies for dessert. I didn’t make the mustard carrots that were also planned – if we need sides later this weekend, I’ll throw them together.
OM NOM NOM.
So yeah – nice, relaxing Thanksgiving with just the three of us. We have enough food to last us through the weekend, I think.
Hoodsie has become the wild turkey-hunting beast once again this year. He only purrs for turkey. Seriously. So he gets a lot of turkey. We want to hear the cat purr!
The plans to get yardwork done have fallen through for a couple days – we’re up against the lawn pickup deadline now. Providence stops picking up leaf bags in two weeks. So hopefully we’ll be able to get them done before the end of the season. If we’re late, the bags will go into the garage for the winter. *sigh*
The rest of the weekend is in flux. I’m going to get some cards written. I have a couple of stitching things to wrap up. I want to get laundry caught up (including that novel thing that is sock matching). I’m going to get caught up on Masterpiece Theater, some audio/visual stuff, some fanfic reading.
And I do really want to write, but my brain is still foggy.
So yeah – that’s what’s up here. How about you guys?
CARDS!
I’m going to start writing them today, so if you want one – drop me your address. I have a signup here, but I know people are starting to get insane.
I’ll screen comments to this entry, and unlock ones that aren’t address-related.
I have two four day weekends in a row. So. Happy. And I need them badly.
So a couple things…
If you’d like a card from me and haven’t dropped me a line, please go [HERE] and drop me a line on the form. It’s private and only I’ll see it, but in years past I had stuff all over the place. This will keep me better organized this year. And my address will pop up after you fill it out – or just let me know that you have a signup on your journal, and I’ll go find it.
And yes, I send internationally. In years past, I was a queen of penpalling. (I just may have sent a postal worker’s child to college with what I spent on stamps). Overseas postage and I are quite familiar.

It’s a semi-working vacation this week for me. Mostly just little errands and chores to do around the house. I’d like to keep Thanksgiving weekend as work-free as possible, since I’m cooking.
I’m also getting an ornament finished up and mailed to my secret-swap partner (who is overseas… so I need to do it quickly to give it mailing time before Christmas). The stitches are done. Tomorrow morning will be adding beads and sewing it together into the little mini-pillow shape it will take, and then adding some decorative braiding and such to finish it off. I’m already proud of it, and I’ll probably make another for myself later.
Since I’m certain that my swap partner’s not on LiveJournal, I’ll post a finished photo of it here under a lock, just to make sure it stays a surprise. I’ll do an open post once I know she’s received it.

Other stuff this weekend… on Friday night we’re going up to see A Christmas Carol being performed by a Catholic girls’ high school in the area. Our best man is directing the show and his mom is the musical coordinator. The school’s drama department is very solid – they do impressive productions. So that’ll be fun.
Immediately after, we’re driving down to Brewster, MA on Cape Cod for the annual Cape LAN – only it’s not really a computer LAN anymore since no one can afford to keep updating computers. Now it’s a weekend for Erich to run a session of his d20 campaigns with the guys and gives me a chance to do a trial run-through on some of the food for Thanksgiving.
Of course the biggest goal for me this time around is… to not get sick. Every year – and I mean EVERY YEAR – I’ve managed to get sick during the Cape LAN weekend. By about mid-day Saturday, I have the sniffles and I’m curled up feeling miserable up in the bedroom to keep myself away from everyone else. After dealing with the aftermath of whooping cough now for two months (that hit me for my LAST vacation days) ? Yeah… not really enthused to go through another round, particularly since I’m still getting the occasional coughing bout out of nowhere.
I’m looking forward to it, though. I’m going to bring my stitching and my laptop and do some tinkering with both crafty stuff and some fic (and rewatch Who, and see where the weekend takes me.

So finally – I need a catch up. I have days to read fanfic. I have a piece from wendymr that was written just as I got hit by whooping cough that I need to catch up on. But what else since like… July… do I need to catch up on?
That’s it… going off to get stuff done now.
- Mel.
Needed to write about this. Posted this on the regular blog. Link’s below.

Dragons that need clicks.
(I guess the Dragon Cave is somewhat back up… I dunno)
It’s been a busy couple weeks – and I’m exhausted and just trying to catch up on things I need to do now, mostly to keep myself sane. I’m looking forward to having a long weekend for Presidents Day.
Erich and Matt are off at a Star Wars d20 game today. Now that we’re down to only one road-legal car for the household, it means that since they’re up in Quincy, I’m homebound. A bit annoying, but I’m making the most of it I suppose. Played a bit of WoW, did some beta work, did some writing, got very yummy chicken wings, and now will be off to do some more writing before taking a late evening nap.
At 2 a.m., my guild will be doing a raid of Stormwind and Ironforge in WoW to finish off the “For the Horde!” achievement (hopefully) and get our war bear mounts. Because our server has a nasty 5 alliance to 1 horde ratio, the only time Horde has a remote chance of completing such quests are butt-ass late at night or butt-ass early in the morning.
So for tonight, I’ll be pretending I’m still in college.
The long winter’s starting to wear on me this year. I don’t generally think I have a weather-affected mood disorder, but I’m definitely crankier this year. Tired of being paranoid about falling as I walk to work (I’ve wiped out twice this winter so far), tired of feeling the cold (it seems to be happening more as I get older), tired of the dry skin and cracked lips and cold sores that go with this time of year.
I’m ready for spring. Or at least to have the snow melt for a little while. I haven’t seen bare ground in over a month now.
The snow we have now fell on New Years Eve.
On the family health front…
Erich’s dad is doing much better. Seems to be getting back to normal, and his diabetes is back under control. I think Erich’s starting to breathe again.
Let’s see… what else lately? Read Pillars of the Earth over the last couple weeks. Surprisingly good book. It moved right along, which was impressive with its bulk. I think now that I’ve seen a couple of Real Life Cathedrals (TM) I can appreciate the storyline a bit more. Or at least grasp onto it better.
Journey’s End is on BBC-A in about a half hour. Debating whether I’ll watch it or not. Aside from fic, I’ve been enjoying being out of fandom the last few weeks.
That’s about me, other than a new style egg.

Back at work after the long weekend, and I definitely have a case of vacation-itis. Very slow, very meh. It’s probably a good thing it’s quiet today, as I’d be moving too damn slowly otherwise.
I spent Sunday doing anything but Who. (for what it’s worth, I still haven’t watched the Confidential from Saturday, nor the Christmas one. *shrug*) I don’t think it helped my mood any that after all of the b.s. on Saturday, BBC-A was showing Silence in the Library, which I do enjoy – but the timing was just not good. I definitely couldn’t sit back and watch Who after the b.s. I’ll be taking a few weeks off from watching eps, I think. Aside from fanfic – which is all AU anyway, I think I’ll be on a nice quiet break from fandom entirely.
So yes – lots of WoW on Sunday, plus a brunch out with Erich, lots of laundry and a belated New Year’s good luck meal of pork chops, sauerkraut, and mashed potatoes (a family superstition). All came out well.
It was a good weekend overall. I accomplished a few things off of my to-do list for January – the biggest being an overhaul of my office. I managed to get most of my fic writing done that I wanted to accomplish, and I’m not worried at all about finishing it up this week. Laundry is all washed, although it needs to be put away.
I’m very happy to have an office again – and it’s much better than ever. It actually looks like a finished room, finally.
I just have some small sorting projects left to do and some extra defurring to do on the pampasan chair, but I can sit down and I can enjoy the space. The new bookshelves from IKEA just make the room look more organized. And really, just walking by it this morning and NOT seeing the god-awful pit of despair was wonderful. I’m not kidding when I say that the room might have been just a bit less scary than the rooms you see on How Clean is Your House?. It was really, really gross and embarrassing.
Now to just get WoW reinstalled on the desktop.
I treated myself to a teapot, too. My office gave the other two admins and me each a gift certificate to Amazon for $50. I’ve been needing a teapot – my small Chinese one had a cat-related breaking incident (and honestly was too small anyway). I found this one and liked the style of it, plus the small loose tea scoop and wood board it comes with. So hopefully in a few days, it’ll arrive. I have some absolutely divine Mint Chai I picked up at Wegmans in November, and I want to be able to brew a pot at a time.
Goals for this week: Finish my fic, get to at least level 77 (if not 78) in WoW, and make sure I can relax this weekend.
