With all of the insanity of Hurricane Sandy, I held off doing updates for a few days. My concern was for my family in Pennsylvania, as well as just watching with horror at all of the devastation that’s been on the TV for the past few days. I just can’t imagine.

While the southern coast of Rhode Island got battered, Erich and I went through the storm completely unscathed. We never lost power. We’re too far inland for the storm surge. We lost one single tree limb, which fell harmlessly into the yard. I do think Irene last year may have saved us on this one – we lost so much from our trees last year. Had they not fallen then, this year’s loss would have been pretty rough. Most of New England was spared from this one for the most part, I think. Sure, there were some power outages, and the coast lines got hammered – but NOTHING like what’s coming out of the Mid-Atlantic.

My mother lost power and land line phone service for the better part of the week – it went out on Monday night, and it was restored on Friday evening. She unfortunately also had some house damage – a tree fell across her backyard, crashing down over her sunroom and obliterating it. She’d already decided to sleep in her 1st floor family room that night, in case a tree crashed over the roof. Instead – the tree that fell was only about 12 feet from her as she slept. Fortunately the house as a whole is still safe and secure – the sunroom was an addition that only shared one wall with the rest of the house, and there’s a locking door (with an alarm) on the surviving wall entering the house. She also was fortunate that despite losing electricity, she has a gas fireplace and gas cooking, so she was able to cook and get some heat for the week. I honestly was more concerned about her losing her phone service – the idea that even if there was an emergency, there’d be no way for her to call 911 bothered me a lot. Just scary, scary stuff. But she’s fine and the rest of my relatives are fine. I have friends whose relatives have lost a lot, and I’m keeping them in my prayers.

2nd ultrasound... Oct 23 2012

My second ultrasound was on Oct 23rd. This was the anatomy survey, where the tech goes through and measures different organs and bone lengths and such. Watching the ultrasound is very, very cool. I’m just starting to feel a couple of little flutters now, but at that point, I still hadn’t felt anything. My baby was very active during the exam, and it was surreal to see so much movement, yet not feel a thing.  Seeing the heart physically beating is just amazing.

The photo to the left is the profile shot.  The head’s on the right – you can follow the forehead to the nose and the chin.  The very bright white lines going through the center is the baby’s spine.

All is going well. Measurements seem right on target. The ultrasound is still insisting I’m a week further than the calculations from my last menstrual period (the date of which I’m certain). I’m still using my last period date as my calculator. According to the ultrasound, I’m about a week and a half further along. The tech thinks we’re having a boy from one of the ultrasound pics. I honestly didn’t see it, and my OB/GYN father wasn’t quite sure when he saw the image either (and he has done his own ultrasounds, so he’s experienced). The earlier genetic test said we were having a girl… so yeah, we’re still in “not quite sure” land. The only definite? We’re having a baby. :) Regardless, I know to have names for both genders ready, and we’d already decided on the green and yellow nursery color scheme, since I do NOT want to go gender-specific on the colors. Goddess knows there will be enough of that with clothes and toys and such. If it comes on time, the second half of March is the target date.

My kidney tests came back clean – so all is well with me, too. My blood pressure’s a little jumpy, but it hasn’t hit the high that instigated the kidney test in the first place.  The nausea is essentially gone. The only time I really feel it is when I’m not keeping up properly with my water intake. My gag reflex is out of control, and I’m getting fearful of brushing my teeth in the morning because it’s a 50/50 shot for dry heaves immediately afterward. I know that this will pass, though, so I’m just dealing with it as best as I can.  Otherwise I’m doing pretty well, I think. I’m not getting the 2nd trimester bliss period that some women report in pregnancy. I certainly feel better than I did the first trimester, but not fabulous and glowing or anything. I do tire very easily and I’m fairly sore and achy most of the time, but I’ll just chalk that up to the joys of pregnancy and not worry about it. I’m still wearing normal clothes, despite being halfway along. I’m just starting to get a hint of a bump, but my clothes are fitting me fine. At my last appointment last week, I was still down a total of 20 pounds. My dad pointed out that I’m probably down closer to 25-30 now, since the baby is replacing some of that weight. Regardless… I’ll take it!

I’d decided to write up the WIPocalypse SAL page during a random rainy day.  I think Irene blowing through our area qualifies.  :)

So come one, come all and sign up for the 2012 Wipocalypse!  And please pass the word along.  :)

It’s been a windy, wet day today, but thankfully it looks like we’re missing the bulk of this storm.  Our rainfall totals haven’t been that bad here in Providence (perhaps 4 inches total), and while it’s been extremely windy, we haven’t had power dip at at all, and so far there doesn’t seem to be any damage in my neighborhood.

I headed up to Bush Mountain Stitchery yesterday morning with Lisa and Rebecca (of Samplers & Such) for a fun day of stitching.  Bush Mountain had to do an emergency move to new permanent quarters last week due to ongoing roof issues with their previous location with a new added perk – a room reserved exclusively for stitching!  The three of us were the proud initiators of the new space, and stitched the entire day until the store closed for the day.

The new store is located in what used to be a bank, and it’s a quirky, fun space.  There are lots of little nooks filled with stash to wander and explore.  While I’m sure there will be some changes to the space as the store develops, for now there’s a room exclusively for standard floss.  Another nook for fabric.  And get this – the bank vault is filled with stash!  You actually have to walk through the big vault door!

The stitching room is well-lit and comfortable.  There are bathrooms right off the stitching room and inexpensive food within a block’s walk, so great for a day out.  Maeann, who owns Bush Mountain, is planning to start some events and classes later this autumn once they’ve settled in.

It was a great day – lots of laughing, lots of stash ooh’s and aah’s.  Lisa worked her version of Witchy Washy (Raise the Roof), Rebecca worked on a gorgeous Ackworth School sampler, and I brought Ye Olde Coffee House (Little House Needleworks).  We all made some good progress while we were there.  I look forward to the next trip!

So while the rain has mostly stopped here today, it’s still extremely windy.  We’re watching Doctor Who, Torchwood, and Battlestar Galactica episodes as we goof around all day.  I’ll probably throw some laundry in later, once the storm has really passed us this evening.

I hope you’re having a lovely weekend!

I am so sick of flood water. You have no idea.

My house? Is okay. Two inches of water in the basement, nothing to worry about.

But getting anywhere near my house is hell. I-95 is closed because it is now part of the Pawtuxet River. (two exits south of my house). The road less than a mile south of my house is closed due to the Pawtuxet. The secondary road I’d use to get around said closed road is ALSO closed because of the Pawtuxet.

Basically? The Pawtuxet has taken over Rhode Island. Or at least a good portion of it.

I couldn’t take the commuter rail home last night because it couldn’t make it through the floodwater on the tracks. The commuter rail train cars are double-deckers, and the lower level’s floor would have been literally at or below the water line. So I took Amtrak home.

I watched a train create a boat wake last night. The water was ABOVE the rail.

9 inches of rain in two days. Sixteen inches of rain since two weeks ago.

So. Sick. Of. Water.

If you’re curious – here you go. Enjoy the psychotic photos: http://www.projo.com

Spring peeking
Originally uploaded by measi

Even though the snow is blowing today, I have proof that springtime is, in fact, right around the corner. I found these little pop-ups in the beds of the new parkland that divides Atlantic Avenue.

For those who’ve been to Boston, but not for a few years… this park is where the elevated portion of I-93 used to be downtown… the highway was put underground during the Big Dig, and a long stretch of parkland now runs the city from North Station/Hanover Street all the way to South Station. It’s fantastic.

Anyway… I’m thrilled. They’re only about an inch tall so far, but there are tons of them – and since Mother Nature knows best, I know that warmer weather is only a few short weeks away. :)

When a cold front hits hot humid air, Boston weather starts doing unusual, San Francisco-like things…

More photos at flickr under the link.  It’s impressive how fast this front moved in.  It cooled things down by 20 degrees, easily.

After the humidity the past couple days, I am not complaining!

So… the rain is back. *sigh* It’s chucking down pretty hard at the moment. And of course, this is the day I didn’t bring an umbrella. You’d think I’d be keeping one on me at all times after three plus weeks of near-daily rain, but no… that would be far too logical. Thankfully I do have the presence of mind to keep a spare in my file drawer here at the office. It’s a crappy one, but in a pinch it’ll do.

Loved Torchwood last night. Not going to discuss it at this point – I want to take in the entire series first. So I shall be spoiler-free until probably Friday night, unless ZOMG TORCHWOOD IS IN CARDIFF!!! is a spoiler now (based on fandom experiences, it would not surprise me). I will say that it’s very strange watching it now and recognizing places I’ve been, especially those stupid little insignificant places that mean nothing except a “hey! I recognize that!” Erich was feeling similarly amused last night.

The Tall Ships have started to arrive in Boston. So far there’s only one. It’s absolutely gorgeous, just sitting there dead-center in Boston Harbor. I’m hoping the weather will be nicer later this week so I can get some photos. I’ll stay late one night and wander down to Falcoln Pier where I presume they’ll be moored (given that it’s the cruise ship dock they were at last time).

Tonight’s plan is Torchwood, Deadliest Catch, and writing. The Support Stacie fic moves ever forward.

I think we’re up to day… 16? 17? of this gloomy early-spring weather. It’s getting a bit tiresome, even if my yard is loving it. San Francisco-like fog is rolling in over Boston Harbor. It’s pretty, but after two weeks of grey skies, I need a good dose of sunshine.

Random things…

Erich’s now the temporary guild leader of our WoW guild. The normal GL is on vacation for a month while her family visits her in Australia, so Erich’s taking over to maintain stuff while she’s gone. He’s already been having some fun joking about infinite power.

Our guild went through 7 brand new bosses in Naxx this weekend. All but two we destroyed on our first attempts, and we managed to clear Naxx for the first time last night. It was a great feeling. Amazing that we’ve learned the entire dungeon in essentially only 13 sessions max.

Support Stacie writing continues to progress. Still writing longhand and drafting. I’m looking forward to a relatively quiet long weekend to hopefully get the draft completed and ready for beta review. I think I’m just about there. Just a few transitional scenes to fix pacing and tie up loose ends, I think. (yay!)

Back to catching up on others’ entries… :)

It’s 18 degrees. Balmy to those in the Upper Midwest, I realize, but it’s the coldest air of the season here so far, so it’s a bit of a jolt to the cold tolerance.

Today’s 90 minute train ride included:

No heat (bundle of fun in a big metal tube that probably hasn’t been used all weekend)
A breakdown at… wait for it… MANSFIELD! (What a surprise, eh? Black. Pit. Of. Doom.)
An idiot IM’ing someone on his iPhone, complete with rapid chiming. (the noise… we hates it!)
Icy walkways in Boston (where the city never plows sidewalks… idiots)

So I’m now about done with coffee #1, soon to go back for coffee #2. And I imagine hot drinks will be the order of the day today. I’m just hoping I will feel my toes sometime before this evening.

Meh.

(being snarky) Remember… Axial tilt is the reason for the season…. (/snark)

It’s a snowy one here – it’s been snowing almost consistently since Friday afternoon. We’re up to about a foot, give or take an inch, and it’s coming down pretty heavy now. Supposedly it’s going to change to rain later, although honestly I hope it doesn’t. Since it’s the first snow of the season here, there’s a pretty, peaceful feel about it. I’d love it to be a white Christmas this year.

After then, it can go away. :)

I’ve received quite a few cards this week – thank you all! :)

The good thing for this weekend is that both of the pieces I need to post for ficathons by the 15th are written. Erich’s doing the beta for me (a bit weird, considering one is rather… smutty). A bit of a relief, although I get tired of being right to the wire like this. *sigh*

I know that both dameruth and misssara11 have written pieces for me this week – I hope to be sitting down to relax and read them tonight, once I know my obligations are all set. :) (an early thank you to both, since I’m always excited to read special fic!)

Christmas cards are finally done – I’m mailing them off tomorrow. aibhinn, I’m also mailing your RSC items tomorrow – two separate packages, FYI.

So this week, I’m going to focus on getting some beta work done for avoria, and start drafting my piece for wiggiemomsi for Support Stacie. And maybe… just maybe, I’ll get my office tidied up so I can start writing there for the winter. I need to put a lot of work into scrubbing it – I haven’t really been in there since August or so. I’d planned to do some work on it today, but my back’s very sore… I think I just slept wrong last night, but I admit I’m overly paranoid about it right now.

So I’m spending the downtime playing WoW. I levelled one of my lowbies to 30 and got her first mount (sooo much cheaper than when I got my mount for Tennetty!). I levelled Tennetty to 73, and she’s now halfway to 74. Cowtastrophe is about 1/4 away from 61. Slowly but surely.

The weather’s been odd this weekend. We were NOT among the millions affected by the ice storm, thankfully. Rhode Island just got a crapload of rain. A few of our friends did lose power, still out now on Sunday evening. Said friends were able to find safe places to stay, thankfully, since the temp dropped very low last night (mid teens). I guess tomorrow’s supposed to be quite warm again – somewhere around 60 degrees. No wonder I’m still feeling like I’m fighting off a bug. *sigh*

Looking forward to our office party on Tuesday – we’re going to the reopened Hard Rock Cafe, now that it’s moved to Faneuil Hall. And we’re having a Rock Band competition. Heh. Should be interesting. :) As long as I’m not forced to sing!

I stand astounded at how those of you living in the Southern U.S. (both east and west) and other nations with said hot, muggy weather do it. A couple days of it here in New England, and I’m just a puddle. ;P It would probably help if Erich and I had air conditioning on the second floor of our house. But ugh. Ick.

Slowly but surely getting better with the nerve pinch. It still hurts, mostly in the afternoon after I’ve put in a full day of work. Thankfully it’s nowhere near what it was a couple weeks ago. Even when it hurts, it’s more of a pinch than a radiating pain like it was. I’m able to do the walk from South Station to my office in the morning without a stop, although if I do feel it starting to get tight, I stop anyway. Better to take this slow.

Oddly, wearing my Chucks does help my ability to walk quite a bit. I suppose the rubber soles are just that extra spring and cushion I need. So I’m slightly breaking company policy today.

I finally have all of my current cross-stitch projects together. All thread replaced, all kits together. So I’m ready for the summer. :) On tap to start will be this rotation, 10 hours each:

Slot 1: New Start (Astrology Sampler)
Slot 2: Teresa Wentzler piece (Floral Bellpull – currently at approx 65%)
Slot 3: Sampler (Apache Wedding Blessing – currently at approx 45%)
Slot 4: Small Piece (Home is Where the Cat Is – currently at approx 85%)
Slot 5: Backstitching Slot (Apache)

Stuff in the wings to be added into these slots: Spirit Dragon (Dragon Dreams Elementals – Small Piece), Noah’s Ark or Millennium (Teresa Wentzler), Why I Love New England (Sampler).

I also have a little giftie piece I’m thinking of doing for a friend. It’s a surprise though. :)

Finishing up my fanfic pinch hit for hearts_in_time tonight and tomorrow. I love it when I finally get an idea that’s nearly fully formed pop into my head. Makes things so much easier. :)

Erich bought a blacklight this weekend so we could scour the house for cat issues. Hoodsie has been spraying due to stress, and we want to do whatever we can to solve the problem rather than getting rid of the cat (we love him – and he is a very good cat in every way but this). Blacklights reveal very scary things, I have to say. But they work wonderfully to find the spots you miss cleaning. :) We also bought one of the Feliway diffusers and plugged it in to the living room, since that’s a room where the cats congregate a lot (while we’re home, since we’re there). So far it actually does seem to be helping a bit. A bit expensive, but hey… if it solves the problem, it’s worth every penny. Allows us to keep both our house safe and the cat safe.

My day lillies next to our driveway have gone absolutely batshit insane. Some of the flower stalks are literally to my shoulder (I’m 5’5″). We have a TON of them, too. When they bloom, I’m going to have to take pictures and post them. It’s going to be a spectacular year for them, thanks to all of the rain.

Still waiting to close on the Norfolk house. *crosses fingers that the town inspector gets off his ass* Erich can’t wait to get that thing off of his plate and use the money to pay off his credit card debt. I can’t blame him.

Demolition has almost finished tearing down the J. Hook buildings next to my office. The rotting fish smell sadly has not gone away. Bleh. I imagine that’s going to hang around for a while.

That’s it. Another hazy, hot and humid day here in Boston. Work to be done.
