And no, I’m not abandoning LJ completely, but I’m thinking of making it for fandom only and returning my personal thoughts over to the site I pay for.

Due to critical errors, I have not been able to restore any information from the previous backup of the site – the database from the backup has gone corrupt due to transfer errors (including a nasty little error that’s adding me as a co-author to every story).
I’ve done a completely new install of the efiction software, and am now working on recreating all of the categories, characters, etc. I expect to have these up and running by the end of the weekend. Update: Added and running, with updates (see Site News).
Sadly, this means that everyone who wishes to participate on the site will need to reregister and resubmit their stories at the main site here:
http://www.zero-room.net
You can still access the backup of the archive here and should be able to log on to copy and paste entries over:
http://www.measi.net/fanfiction
Please note that some of the categories and organizational structure may have changed.
Again, I’m very sorry for the inconvenience, and I do hope that you’ll be joining us on the site once more.
Best,
Measi
So here’s the deal.
Several years ago, per the recommendation of a former friend, I selected Globat as a webhost. To say they’ve been absolutely horrific in the last several months is an understatement, and I’m regretting ever hosting with them – to the point that I’m willing to break my contract, drop them the “go away” money, and find a new host.
So for folks who use a 3rd party webhost, who have you used, and who do you recommend? I’m essentially looking for the standard webhost with some database capability (to run efiction), WordPress, and something that won’t put me much above $100 per year for hosting.
Any recommendations?
I’ve finally moved my normal blog onto WordPress, which is absolutely wonderful. Come see! http://measi.net/measiblog/
ETA: A couple people have emailed/asked… no, I’m not quitting LJ. The two have run concurrently for about 6 years now. I don’t use the other one for fannish stuff really at all, aside from the occasional general mention. If I have things I need to friends-lock, it stays here, but is never posted over there.
*sigh* The Zero Room is currently not taking new fic submissions due to webhost stupidity. Updates on the status will follow… but here’s the situation right now”
So after the site came back up last Tuesday, I thought all was well. And then today, I get this gem of an email:
Dear Melissa,
Your account has not yet been moved
to the new hosting platform because it has not yet passed
our quality assurance testing. At this time, you need to get
involved! Our original servers are scheduled to be taken
offline on June 22, and we need to make sure your site is hosted
on the new platform before that happens.
(whole lot of linky stuff… all of which go to annoyingly vague pages with no real info of what to do, or how the process works)
We apologize for the difficulties this situation may present,
and we will try to help you as best we can. If you have
questions, please call us at 877-xxx-xxxx or submit a new
support request.
A couple things -
It took me a farking WEEK and several threatening emails to get my sorority’s website cancelled. I never could get through on the phones.
The entire transition has been a confusing, little-information-given scenario. Access to my files has been limited, and while they’re now claiming I need to get involved, there’s no clear hierarchy of files shown so I know I’m actually moving anything. All I see is ONE server screen, and an unhelpful “your migration is in progress” button. Problem is that I have no information given on how to do things the logical way (you know… FTP my files). Everything’s through this stupid process that, since I don’t work for the webhost, I don’t get to know what paths are going where.
How the FARK am I supposed to get involved here if I get no information to work with?!?
*sigh*
I’m seriously going to start shopping around for a new webhost, I think. Everything was running fine for years, and the last three months with this unknown and unexplained “transition” has just caused headache after headache.
In the meantime – anyone strong with MySQL databases that could lend a hand with some error checking? It’s the one part of my website setup that’s still a bit confusing.
Just FYI…
I’m currently doing a database/story backup and software update of The Zero Room. The site is currently in maintenance mode and is not accepting new stories.
I expect to have it back up within the next couple hours.
ETA: Upgrade and edits complete – Author review response now works, the database and story archive is backed up, and the most recent version of eFiction is installed.
Only weird thing now is that the spaces between “Most Recent” stories on the index page has disappeared.
Erich and I went to the wedding of our friend Kevin (and now by extension, Nicole) yesterday. Kevin proposed to Nicole on the morning of our wedding, so it felt a bit like a circle coming around to rejoin itself. This was the first wedding we’ve been to since our own – and just as some of my married friends have said, it feels very different than before you’re married.
Kevin and Nicole are both devout Catholics, so… full mass, of course. And somehow I was the only one in my group of friends who actually was used to the rhythms of Mass (having grown up in the Rite I Episcopal by parents/Roman Catholic by grandparents household). There were a couple “Wait… why is Mel still KNEELING? Oh crap, all of the Catholics are still kneeling!!!” moments. Even though I no longer believe, I still find said rhythms comforting. It does allow someone who’s not completely opposed or wigged out by the formalities to find a quiet headspace fora while.
Of course, the frequent standing/sitting/kneeling routine irritated my bad leg, too. Made for me being much more careful to stay put at the reception.
In any case, the wedding was beautiful, Kev and Nicole both looked fabulous, and the reception was at a yacht club on the North Shore on a fantastic afternoon.
Good times by all.
Never got around to fixing the zero-room website coding this weekend. Just got too busy. Hopefully I’ll get to that at some point this week in the evening. I’m very amused that every single pissed off comment from the who_anons have been negated. Since they bitched, we’ve had 20 new members. Their claims of drawing non-D/R shippers have proved false as well. I’ve dropped emails to the classic Who writers I see over on alt.drwho.creative, and I’ve been inviting some of the folks who write fic over on the DWF to come on over… including the people who create their own fantasy series of the show (where a group writes a season in digital form). Interest is mixed, but hey… it’s getting the word out there.
I’ve managed to gather all of the missing colors of embroidery thread that I need to kit up the unfinished stitching projects in my stash. So sometime in the next couple weeks, I’ll get all of the new bobbins wound, get a rotation set up, and get to work. With gas prices as high as they are, I forsee being a homebody this summer and doing a lot of stitching.
So yeah… busy weekend.
Just received an email from my service provider (FINALLY!!!) that the archive’s permanent domain is up and running. They were quite apologetic and nice about it, which I appreciated.
So…
For the moment, I’ve halted new submissions to the temporary domain. I’m hoping that everything that’s there will be easy to transfer over to the new space. Thankfully, it’s only 40 stories right now if that is a problem.
The new space will be at http://www.zero-room.net
Hold off making plugs until I get the stuff transferred, though!
Everything seems to have transferred – new stories can be submitted, and you should have no problems logging in. If you do find problems, let me know.
SPDN, please feel free to link. Everyone else, please feel free to pass along to your friends and communities (please ask moderators if it’s not your own community first, however!)
The Zero Room fanfic archive is ready for submissions. We’re still settling in with the headers for the site, but the categories and necessary story classifications are ready to go. It will eventually be moving to its own domain, but for now can be found at http://www.measi.net/fanfiction/
All ratings are welcome from all eras of Doctor Who, Torchwood, or Sarah Jane Adventures fiction, including crossovers from the Who universe and other fandoms. We have no moderation queues – authors are responsible for archiving their own fanfiction. Instead of a recommended list, a featured story is located on the index page, selected at random by the archive webscript.
